A Young Man Hits The Bottom of the Barrel in Life, Conquers His Depression, Gets Alcohol Therapy for His Abusive and Heavy Drinking, and Enhances His Self Esteem

Samuel was a thirty-eight-year-old accounts receivable manager who was fed up with feeling depressed everyday and sick of his unhealthy drinking behavior. Stated briefly, he was sick of feeling lackluster every morning, he hated the hangovers he went through on a regular basis, he was tired of going through failed relationship after failed relationship due to his excessive drinking, he was angry with himself for spending his hard-earned money on a valueless habit, and he missed his old motivation for doing various things he enjoyed.

Additionally he despised the fact that he had to go to court for his third DWI, he was fed up with paying for alcohol-related lawyer fees, he was disgusted with how out-of-shape he was, he was bored with his drinking friends, and he was irritated with the many times he failed an alcohol test at his place of employment.

In addition to the noticeable alcohol-related health difficulties he was experiencing, probably the nastiest part of his drinking regimen was the unreliable and fraudulent person he had become. In his heart of hearts he knew that he had been lying about his drinking behavior to his family, friends and relatives and he also knew he had been dishonest with himself about the “positive” outcomes of drinking. Not only this but he justified gulping four or five drinks before going to social events and he also rationalized needing a few drinks as soon as he got up so that he could cope with the “pressures” at his place of employment.

His Depression and His Excessive and Abusive Drinking Result in Significant Changes in His Life

It was apparent that Samuel was sick of putting up with the adverse effects of his depression and his unhealthy drinking and eventually made up his mind that something major had to change in his life. So he decided that he would stop drinking, start focusing on becoming a more healthy person, involve himself in some worthwhile hobbies, develop a new circle of friends, get professional counseling, and start exercising.

Stated briefly, Samuel got to the point in his life during which he understood that he hit a low point in life and was now ready to start the slow and gradual road to recovery.

One of the ways that Samuel operationalized his “plan” was by requesting a transfer at work. When his request was granted, he moved 200 miles away to a new city. If nothing else, this without a doubt made making new friends and distancing himself from his old pals simpler. Then he visited with a healthcare professional in his new city and made an appointment for a thorough psychological and physical exam.

Samuel Meets With a Physician About His Heavy and Hazardous Drinking and His Depression

After meeting with the doctor and going through a number of lab tests, it was determined that Samuel had crossed the line from alcohol abuse to alcohol addiction and consequently was in need of alcohol detoxification and alcohol treatment. At this time, the doctor made it a point to go over the diverse signs of alcoholism, the symptoms of alcoholism, and information about alcohol long term effects with Samuel.

The healthcare practitioner then told Samuel that it was decided that he was clinically depressed and in need of treatment for this medical problem.

Samuel Makes up His Mind to Build Up His Body by Eating Nutritious Foods, Drinking Distilled Water, Going to the Gym, Living an Alcohol-Free Lifestyle, and Taking Vitamins

Due to his readiness to follow through with the rehab regimen, after four weeks of inpatient rehab, Samuel was ready to start rehab on an outpatient basis. At this point in time, he began working at his new job and over the weeks began revitalizing his body by taking vitamins, eating nutritious foods, exercising, living an alcohol-free way of life, and drinking distilled water.

Samuel also tackled his spiritual concerns by joining the local Methodist church and attending regular services.

After around three months of outpatient rehab during which time he never went through a relapse, Samuel stopped going to alcohol rehabilitation and instead began going four times per week to local AA meetings. Attending these meetings helped Samuel follow through with his alcohol-free style of life, they gave him the support he needed, and they served as a persistent reminder of the destructive outcomes that are associated with hazardous drinking.

After going to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings roughly five months Samuel felt that he was ready for a relationship and so he started going out with Sharon, a young lady he met at church. It clearly astonished Samuel how much more prepared he was for a dating relationship now that he had his abusive drinking under control. Indeed it also amazed Samuel how much better life was now that he wasn’t under the control of his excessive and unhealthy drinking. Life was now pleasant and loaded with possibilities that he could have never longed for or fulfilled when he was involved in hazardous and abusive drinking just a few short months ago.

A Success Story That is a Tribute to the Significance of Alcohol Rehab and the Power of Change

Samuel’s success story is evidence of the relevance of alcohol rehab and the power of change. As Samuel thought about his newfound positive self image and motivation for involving himself in healthy, worthwhile activities, he was actually appreciative that he made up his mind to do something positive about his abusive drinking rather than giving into his depression and into the lure of his alcohol addiction. The result: he has more energy now compared with any time in his adult life, he is involved in a loving relationship, he enjoys his new job responsibilities, he is in charge of his life rather than letting himself languish under the control of his alcohol dependency, and his life now has a positive direction.
