When a dark mood takes hold and threatens to ruin everything in its path, take steps and learn how to beat depression fast.
Chemical warfare: An imbalance in brain chemicals is one factor that causes of depression. There are many things that you can do to bring the levels of neurochemicals back into line, but the quickest is exercise. Exercise releases endorphins and endorphins help lift mood. Endorphins also help regulate mood, so fighting back with these is like waging a chemical war on a low mood. Any amount of exercise releases these endorphins, so if the thought of a prolonged session does not seem manageable, do something else. Even a short walk will get you moving enough to release those endorphins.
Tactical operations: Nutritional deficiencies have a negative impact on mood as do unstable blood sugar levels. Avoiding sugary foods will lessen the likelihood of an artificial drop in blood glucose levels. Vitamin C also helps counteract the effect of stress hormones on the body, and helps stabilize blood sugar. Vitamin B deficiencies are also a contributing factor in some people. Nuts and seeds, cashews or walnuts for example, are a good source of B vitamins. To minimize sleep disturbances, avoid caffeine.
Manage Expectations: Depression is more than just a low mood. It is a medical condition that can be managed with proper treatment. Just as you would not expect to manage a heart condition or diabetes by willpower, do not expect to manage depression that way. Unlike a heart condition though, a conscious decision to work through the depression can have therapeutic value. Be persistent about seeking to improve. Refuse to give in or to give up.
Stand your ground: Do not give in to the urge to withdraw. Social interaction is an important component to getting better. Seek contact with other people. Find a group that interests you and attend.
Express emotions: Life is about experiencing emotions. So, do that. If you feel that you want to cry, do it. If you want to get angry, do that too. Denying the range of healthy emotions will only prolong the time you spend stuck in depressive states.
Take an active role in getting better. Also recognize that sometimes depression is a serious medical malady that needs professional help. See a doctor if depressed moods persist or interfere with your daily activities.
