Divorce is a very difficult and frustrating phase in the life of a person. When children are involved the whole process is that much more trying as you try to keep the children on an as even a keel as possible.
People go through stages in the event of a divorce. You’ll experience anger, vengeance a sense of loss and finally a realization that you need to move on with your life. It is important to think about the kids first during all of these steps. If you think that divorce is traumatic on you, think how traumatic it must be for a child who is seeing his whole life turned upside down.
Children, through the process must be reassured that they are not to blame. You can accomplish this by using common sense. Never argue with your spouse in front of your children, and by all means never “bad mouth” the other person in front of them. This makes the child feel like they have to take sides and is not a healthy situation.
When possible always participate in family events and show your children that everyone can still be friends. If you promise your children that you will be there to pick them up at a certain time, make sure that you do. There’s nothing harder on a child than thinking their mom or dad doesn’t have time for them.
When problems do occur and the children do not deal with the situation in a healthy manner, do not hesitate to seek counseling as a family unit and put any differences aside. It will help children cope with the situation if they see that both of their parents still care about them.
Always attend events at school when your child is involved. These are the critical times for a parent to be there for the child and any parent who misses it will regret it. Your child will remember your absence for the rest of their life.
Children should always be given the first preference in case a person is going through divorce so that he does not feel negated. Your actions and behaviors will have a lifelong effect on them.
